Why you Need People with a STEM Mindset in your Team…

            24th May 2023

The sustainability of the modern world depends on STEM. The education system, food production, transportation, manufacturing – all aspects of our security, our economy, our health, our lives – it’s all supported and driven by science, technology, engineering and math. STEM is critical from 3 perspectives:

            1. Prepares for the future of life and work – STEM is critical to successfully navigate and participate effectively in the future. A STEM mindset is vital to becoming conscious, aware and compassionate members of society, driven by scientific temperament.
            2. Utility of science in everyday life – The application of science in everyday life makes the STEM learning process more inclusive; situated in the context of the learner.
            3. STEM for promoting global sustainability agenda – Along with environmental sustainability, each of the Sustainable Development Goals require an application of the STEM mindset to fuel research and innovation which drives equity.

            What is STEM Mindset?

Someone with a STEM mindset believes that addressing questions using a scientific approach to draw evidence-based conclusions helps to discover how things work and what to believe, to identify opportunities and risks, to make decisions and take action, and to predict likely outcomes.

Someone with a positive STEM mindset necessarily possesses a growth mindset – the idea that your intelligence isn’t fixed, and you can grow your knowledge through learning and by putting in effort. Those with a growth mindset possess grit, perseverance, and embrace learning from failure – no doubt a beneficial outlook for STEM students and practitioners as they question and investigate to understand phenomena, or design and evaluate solutions to new problems.

STEM individuals of all ages certainly benefit from a mindset that prioritises creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. Imagination, innovation, and inventiveness; working with others; sharing findings and solutions with colleagues, decision-makers, and the public; making evidence-based decisions – all are certainly important ways of thinking in STEM.

Because of the role science and technology play in our lives, a STEM mindset isn’t reserved only for those with or pursuing STEM-related careers. It is important to everyone – at any age, in any profession, and anywhere in the world.

It’s fascinating to see the phrase STEM being used to describe “mindset” yet when you read the rationale above it makes perfect sense. As with everything in life balance is key and ensuring you have a sufficient number of team members with other mindsets to collaborate with STEM mindset members is potentially a recipe for success.
