Salary Transparency is Good For You…

            31st May 2023

61% of applicants say that details about compensation are what matters most in a job description, followed equally by job details and qualifications at 49%. (LinkedIn) Salary transparency is good for you…

Adzuna analysed 80 million UK job ads between 2016 and April 2023 to highlight the sectors, regions, and companies who are most and least transparent about pay. According to the data, the proportion of UK job ads including vital salary information has slipped to a seven year low.

Despite Adzuna research showing job ads with a salary receive 6 times more applications, just 51.5% of UK job ads disclosed an intended salary or salary range in April 2023, significantly lower than 61.4% a year ago.

Against the context of a slower economy, this may also reflect a growing pressure to keep to tight budgets, but falling pay transparency comes with a very real cost – making pay gaps worse.

Voluntary jobs are most likely to include pay information, with 84.3% of job ads disclosing salary in April 2023, followed by Social Work roles (72.9%), Logistics & Warehouse (70.9%) and Manufacturing positions (70.4%).

Geographically, the West Midlands is the most transparent region in April 2023 with 55.6% of job ads including salary information, compared with 47% here in Wales.

On the global playing field, the UK may be falling behind, with major cities like New York introducing legislation making it law for employers to include salary information on jobs ads, and the EU Pay Transparency directive pushing through a similar initiative in Europe.

Of course, candidates also care a lot about other aspects of the job, but first and foremost, they want to know if the job will support them and their family.

            MD Comment

I hear employers provide a variety of reasons for not publishing salary details in job adverts. The bottom line from independent research and my own 30 years of hiring experience is by lacking salary transparency in a job advert the employer significantly reduces their candidate pool and raises doubts from those who do apply. In such a competitive hiring and retention landscape, can any employer who wants the best hires for their team afford not advertise with full details of the salary on offer?
