            Building Your A-Team

            8th March 2023

There is no doubt, that with the current economic and recruitment challenges many companies face, developing teams and retaining top talent will be top of the agenda in 2023.

Due to the increase in hybrid or remote working environments since the pandemic, companies are reviewing their management strategies and communication channels, to provide appropriate support to their teams and develop stronger relationships. A strong team is a motivated team, where managers know and can improve on individual strengths as well as one where every member is aware of the shared company goals and how they contribute towards achieving them. These teams are underpinned by good communication and regular feedback.

A collaborative team dynamic has a knock on effect for knowledge sharing, transparency, increased sense of belonging and increased productivity.

Employee recruitment and retention statistics can help shed light on what HR and businesses must do to attract, retain and engage their A-team effectively.

What Top Talent is Looking For in their Next Employer?

According to research, employee must-haves in accepting a new role include:

            • 73% of employees say that competitive salary is a ‘must-have’ in their current role, whereas only 37% of employers currently offer or plan to offer this. (MetLife, 2022)
            • 80% of respondents stated DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) efforts we an important factor when choosing an employer (Deloitte 2022)
            • With the cost of living on the rise, it is no surprise that overtime pay topped the list of UK employees more desired “work perk” (79%).  Flexible working hours (77%) and company-sponsored retirement plans (75%) followed in second and third place as some of the most popular employee benefits in the UK.  (Remote, 2022)
            • Health and wellness programmes are a must have for 52% of workers, however 33% of employers currently offer this. (MetLife, 2022)
            • 67% workers believe that new skills will help them achieve these career goals. The survey found a considerable demand for on-the-job training, with 39% of workers saying they would find this particularly useful. A further 31% of workers wanted courses specific to their sector, as well as encouragement and practical support from their employer – with 1 in 3 saying they felt held back by a lack of time (36%), a lack of confidence (31%) or knowing where to start (30%).  (Censuswide, 2022)
            • 78% of respondents said they are prioritising the latest connectivity and digital tools to power their hybrid working life and 81% said the right tech keeps them happy at work. (Censuswide, 2022)
            • 65% of employees are now hoping to make changes to their careers, ranging from reduced hours, to moving roles within an organisation, to choosing a completely different career path (Aviva, 2021)

Building a strong and effective team and culture creates an employee experience employees want and expect. Employees leave and join for many reasons, so it is important to understand the “why” to maintain the employee experience.

Technology is your secret weapon as many new employees are looking at their potential employers tech investment and digital training when deciding on their future role. Technology also helps engage and inspire teams, aiding in retaining your very best.

Building your A team has always been demanding and the rollercoaster we’ve all had over the past 3 years has made this an even greater challenge.

What’s emerged from the past few years is a workforce which is much clearer on their priorities and where career and work fits with their life and not vice versa.

There is a lot to consider when building your A team.

If we look beyond skills and experience, our work with leading businesses who continue to attract and hire A players, there are a number of consistent threads joining their success: Flexibility, a positive culture with an effective DEI mantra, social benefit from their products , clear direction for the employee and the business.
